Our Government created innumerable incentives to cause development of oil and gas resources domestically beginning after the 1974 Oil Embargo and subsequent crisis. Many new resources were identified and opened all over the US and its holdings, tied to the outrageous prices then of $18 per barrel, and correspondent gas prices.
In 1986, in a move clearly favored by Big Oil and the Arabs, these incentives were wiped out, essentially wiping out small independent producers throughout the US, by artificially depressing the prices of Oil and Gas to eliminate the competition. It worked just as they planned it, and we have seen the US Oil and Gas Industry consolidate both domestically and globally, down to what is now essentially 7 Global players.
What if the Government had not taken sides and continued to develop and re-develop new and existing proven sites here? The answer is obvious. There would be no Oil and Gas crisis of any sort here or globally. In addition, prices would be fixed competitively rather than by global cartels, at levels that would only be a portion of what they are now.
Some significant group needs to get in the face of those responsible before they are allowed to die of old age. This is a continuing disgrace.
Our question here must be the analog of asking what will happen here when the Government gets off its dead ass and moves to correct the abuses of the last 15 years. I say that the profiteers must be treated as War profiteers, including not only forfeiture of their ill-gotten gains, but also be sent to prison for their offenses.
What say all of you?
